Take Pride in the Quality of Your Work, discover the value

Once you start loving the work you do, your work will be fun. Then, you don’t have to work again for rest of your life. Easy to say it, but difficult to follow. It’s a fact that the work we do (to earn salary) involves many tasks that we would like to avoid. At same time, there will be many tasks that will be of significant important to others. If we identify such important, valuable tasks, and focus on them, the work can be really fun.
For example, the salesman in a consumer goods store is required to talk same, repetitive sentences to his customers, explaining the features of the products on display. He needs to answer similar queries from different customers. In a first thought, this looks like a monotonous, non-sense job.
However, if we think from the customer’s point of view, the salesman is like a friend, a guide to them. The customers enter the store to find a solution that will solve their problems. The customers approach the salesman and explain their problem, needs to him and ask for a suitable solution. Some customers may be interested in a product that will protect them from the heat in summer while others may be interested in a machine that will clean their laundry effortlessly. From a range of products available in the store, the salesman helps the customers to buy a product most suitable to their needs, thus, providing a solution to their problems.
If the salesman starts focussing on the value of his work, his job will be fun. He will realise that he is not just selling machines, but making people happy.
Therefore, it is essential that we discover the value involved in our work, to make it fun. Below are a few tips to improve the quality of your work.

•              Commit to Quality
Decide that with anything you do, you'll do it the right way. Just committing to quality will cause you to reconsider sending out a half-baked project and increase your quality.

•              Brainstorm
Think of ways you can do it better. Think of ways to put systems around your tasks.

•              Envision Success
Ask yourself "What would perfect execution look like for this task?" Now go do it.

•              Be Proud of Your Quality
If you take pride in your quality, you won't release non-quality items.

•              Solve the Problem, Not the Request
Sometimes a "simple" request is not so simple. Find out what the requester really wants, then give it to him. Above example of a salesman explains this point clearly.

•              Think big picture
Don't just solve the problem by applying a quick fix. See how it fits in the big picture and determine if you san solve a big problem with just a little more effort.

•              Don't Wait for Deadlines
It's inevitable that people rush to finish a task at the deadline. This only leads to more problems. The solution is simple- start early and plan your schedule so that you finish early. Which leads to others looking for you for a solution.

•              Exceed expectations
You've understood the expectations and you've set expectations- now do your best to exceed them. Everyone loves good surprises!
